Although the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching has created national standards for health coaches in the US, laws do not mandate these standards. Look for health coaches that have been certified by credible organizations like the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching

Health coaches provide you with ways to keep a positive mindset. They motivate you while building you up. Make sure your coach does this for you.

A health coaching relationship is collaborative. Your coach will offer guidance, but they will also encourage autonomy. Coaches utilize motivational interviewing— a process in which they ask open-ended questions to help you process thoughts, explore your own motivations, and develop strategies for changing your behavior. Choose a coach who listens well and gives you the opportunity to find the right path for you.
